If you go to The Curve often you might have walked pass by this tiny little cafe on ‘The Walk’, the strips between The Curve and Cineleasure. You might even walk pass California Cafe hundreds of times and not even notice it.

So this time we decided to stop by and try out its desserts.

There are limited choice of ice cream on its ice cream menu. We ordered the Black Forest Coupe and Cherry Jubilee.

Black Forest Coupe is for chocolate lovers. Its a gigantic scoop of chocolate ice cream with pitted dark cherry, four cubes of chocolate brownies and two chocolate sticks. The Chocolate ice-cream has a bitter chocolate taste, a dark chocolate taste. Something a chocolate fan will enjoy.

The Cheery Jubilee on the other hand is also a gigantic scoop of ice cream garnished with pitted black cherry, whipped cream and chocolate shaved stick. When it comes to ice creme, I’m bias towards chocolate. I would say that the Cheery Jubilee tasted just ok. However according to someone who isn’t as bias as me it tasted awesome. Yes that was her exact words, ‘awesome’.

The cafe is the first shop on the Walk on Curve, it’s right in front of the Curve entrance. So on a sunny day you could sit here out door, which allowed you to smoke while still feel the cold breeze of air con coming from the Curve.

It’s a good place to sit and chill while watching people walk around. During the evening you’ll be entertained with with live music coming form the Asam Pedas restaurant.

California Cafe price however is some what premium.

Recently I went to Burger King. Sometimes I love some fast food, and Burger King is one of my favorite. As I arrived at the outlet, I notice a promotional poster. It’s the new BBQ Beefacon Cheese Stacker with the tag line “Do You Dare?”.

There are three types of burger, first one seems like your normal Burger King burger, strips of beefacon, beef patty and cheese. They call this one ‘Gutsy’. Next is the same burger but with two beef patty stacked together. They call this one ‘Difiant’. Last one is also the same burger but this time with three beef patty stacked together. They call this ‘Fearless’.

Of cause this is a challenge a MakanByte writer like myself just could not ignore. I ordered the triple stacker. I expect to be scared shitless with the huge giant burger. What I got instead is not the intimidating. So there is an extra beef patty, not really a big deal.

I thought that I was going to be bloated stuffing myself with this Triple Stacker. Not really the case. I manage to finish it, and I could even finish the fries. Seriously, it’s not really a big deal.

The burger is not that bad actually. If you are hungry for some solid beef burger, you might want to try this. Don’t be scared of the Triple Stacker, that’s all I’m saying.

My dad just got back from Sabah. Apparently in Sabah seafood is pretty cheap, he brings back with him a few boxes of prawns. This calls for a prawn fiesta. Several different types of prawns were prepared.

If you were wondering how one ships prawns or other seafood from Sabah, they are packed in a plastic bag of frozen ice. Just like a block of ice with prawns inside. It would last for hours before completely melt. This also means that it will take some time for it to defrost.

The small shrimps were cooked tempura style.

While the medium size were deep fried.

We also had some fries.

Those however, were just starters. Main course were the huge tiger prawns. Marinated with butter, salt, white pepper and black pepper. Make sure you get it all in.

The grill the Tiger prawns till it’s red.

I’m taking my time when eating it. Sucking the butter before peeling and finally biting on the juicy prawn meat. I took three of those big ones.

As you may notice our family are nuts about prawns. Myself, I’m nuts about prawns and seafoods. We prepared the prawns with simple dish, nothing fancy. Do you have a favorite prawn dishes?

Izzi is part of “Izzi Pizza”, an established chain of popular restaurants specializing in Italian and Asian cuisine in Jakarta, Indonesia. Izzi Kuala Lumpur is the chain’s flagship restaurant and the first of several outlets to go international.

I don’t think it has anything to do with Izzi broadband, but they do have free Wifi at their outlets.

We went to Izzi at Bukit Bintang, one of its big outlets. It’s cozy and they played nice easy listening music. The waiter who greeted us was very friendly. Maybe we were just lucky and he was in a good mood. Whatever it is, happy waiter makes happy customers.

We ordered a regular pizza, shared by two people. It’s just nice.

Since both of us are such meat eaters, we ordered Beef ‘n’ Izzi. Pepperoni, sausages and some beef strips were the topings.

It’s good, well not the greatest pizza I had ever had, but it’s ok. I like the pizza’s thin crust.

The pizza cost RM 34.80.

For the deserts we ordered Apple Strudel and Chocolate Dome.

Izzi’s strudel is a favorite among regular Izzi customers, so say the waiter. We tried the Apple Strudel and we could see why it is a favorite. It was lovely, the pastry is just nice and the filling was not too sweet.

Apple Strudel cost RM 3.90.

The Chocolate Dome on the other hand is a must try for chocoholics and all chocolate fans out there. It is especially made for those who crave dark chocolates. The smooth dark chocolate desert was heavenly. Highly recommended for choc lovers.

Chocolate Dome cost RM 4.90.

Overall it was a satisfying lunch. Sharing a pizza was a good idea, we were not too bloated. It’s just nice.

Bored with the usual routine of berbuka puasa, all the usual food, ayam golek, ikan bakar and what not, we tried something different. The epitome of fast food, McDonald’s.

There was a time for me when McDonald’s if a way of life. Eating at McD’s brings back memories.

During my school days, I had McD’s for almost everyday. It is the hang out place for me and my friends. It is easy and there is no surprise you know what to expect when coming to a McDonald’s. A Big Mac is a Big mac no matter which McD you go.

A complete and filling meal for me involves a Grilled Chicken Fold-over, fries and Mac Flurry deserts. Ever since I tried the Grilled Chicken Fold-over when it was first introduced a couple years ago, I got hooked. It’s my all time favorite meal at McD’s.

However I prefer the old Mac chicken fold-over packaging then thise new box type. It gets messy when you try to handle the overflow of stuff in the fold-over.

Another tradition we would always do when hanging out at McD’s is the french fries mountain. Each value meals comes with a set of carbonated drinks and a pack of french fries.

Usually we would throw all of our fries in one tray, put some pepper, used to be that you would have to ask for extra salt and pepper but nowadays they usually have it next to the chili and ketchup dispenser.

The larger you group are the bigger the french fries mountain would be. Today was only the two of us so it is more of a hill then a mountain.

A great way to just hangout, chill, talking crap while munching on a mountain of french fries.

I also tried their new Mac Flurry, the Oreo mudpie. It’s ok, but I prefer the Mac Flurrychocolate Cornetto desert Mac Flurry instead.

Yesterday we went to Madam Kwan for berbuka puasa. Madam Kwan chain of restaurants have been around for quite sometime and I’ve seen a few outlet pop-up here and there.

We went to the Pavilion’s Madam Kwan outlet, located at the Lower Ground floor, where the Pavilion’s Food Republic is.

‘Truly Malaysian Cuisine’, is Madam Kwan’s tagline and they stay true to it. Even though they do serve western meals on it’s menu, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

When I’m in Madam Kwan, there is only two things I had in mind. The Nasi Lemak and Nasi Bojari. I had Nasi Bojari this time.

Cost around RM20++, it is a pretty heavy meal. You get a scoop of fragrant rice, coloured and fried with bits of chicken, garlic and dried prawns, served with either beef or chicken tender rendang and also some asam prawns. If that’s not enough you have a nice big juicy fried chicken thigh.

Nasi Bojari is one of Madam Kwan’s signiture dish and I highly recommend it.

I also suggest you try its ‘cendol’ for deserts. It’s nothing special but I like that they serve it separately from the brown sugar syrup. This way you can choose to have your cendol desert extra sweet or not to sweet.

The prices are not cheap, but I can say it is worth it. Bare in mind that you are paying for a premium. Its restaurant are nicely decorated, air conditioned, and served by friendly and helpful staff.

Madam Kwan also has a very quick order to serving time. I don’t mind waiting for my food but sometimes when you are hungry, it’s nice to have your food served quickly.

Currently there are four outlets that I know of, one in Midvalley Megamall, one in Suria KLCC on on Telawi Street Bangsar, and one in the Pavilion KL. I’ve been to all of these Madam Kwan outlets several times, and I could safely say that its food and service quality is consistent throughout each outlets.

For those of you who aren’t familiar, Mooncakes are Chinese pastry traditionally eaten during Mid-Autumn Festival. This is when the moon is believe to be at its most beautiful and roundest on the night.

Legend has it that, the Mid-Autumn festival is intricately linked to the legends of Chang E, the mythical Moon Goddess of Immortality. There are also stories that mooncakes were used as a medium by the Ming revolutionaries to secretly distribute letters in order to overthrow the Mongolian rulers of China in the Yuan dynasty.

Then again I am no expert in Chinese legend or its history. Whenever I saw a bakery selling mooncakes I know it is that time of the year and I just have to get one.

A traditional mooncakes have an imprint on to consisting of the Chinese characters for ‘longevity’ or sometime it’s just the name of the bakery.

The typical traditional filing are either red bean paste or lotus paste. However modern mooncakes have various types of filings ranging from cream cheese, tiramisu, green tea and even chocolate or durian.

As for me, I love the traditional red bean paste. Usually there is a salted egg yolk in the middle, but I prefer to have it plain. This kind of beats the purpose as I think the yolk sort of symbolize the full roundness of the moon.

I don’t give much thought of the legend anyway.

When one talk about Roti Bakar (toast) and half-boil egg, usually it’s something you have for breakfast. However, most breakfast meals in Malaysia is now considered an all day meal.

You can get Roti Bakar (toast) and half-boil egg at any time of the day, most probably at all of the Kopitiam type shops that are popping up almost everywhere.

At Memori Corner however, it is a little bit different. Instead of having a plate of toast and a bowl of half-boil egg, separately, they have them together.

Two set of toast and two half-boil egg served together. It’s less the hassle I guess and they called it, Roti Special.

I’ve had this Roti Special a few times at Memori Corner, and each time the eggs are perfectly half-boiled. I can assure you, that it is not a fluke.

Located at Jalan Melati Utama 4, Melati Utama, Setapak. Near a Petronas station off MRR2 heading to Gombak. You can’t miss it.

Due try the Roti Special whenever you at Memori Corner.

If you live in PJ or if you work somewhere around the PJ area you must have heard of this place called SS2 Murni.

I first heard about SS2 Murni when I was still staying in Ampang, from a friends who stayed in Putrajaya and work somewhere in K.L. city. Hardly a PJ people, yet they know of this eating place at SS2 called Murni.

It is very difficult to describe what Murni is. At first glance you can call it a mamak, but their menu offers more then what you find in a typical mamak place.

It is a mamak that has almost everything you could think of. They also have special menu that you might not find anywhere else. Just ask the waiter, he or she will then recite the legendary ‘Murni menu chant’.

One of it’s special is a unique dish called Roti Hawaii. It looks like a Murtabak with mayonnaise drawn to look like a spider web.

Unlike ordinary Murtabak, where you only get mince meat or chicken inside, Murni’s Roti Hawaii has mince chicken, chopped sausages and eggs.

Served with a choice of curry, dall or kuah madu, as what you get when you order a typical Roti Canai from a mamak stall. As with almost all of other Murni’s menu, they tend to add something extra, unique, something that makes it ‘Murni’.

It is not a heavy meal, but it’s very filling.

For first time Murni goers, one thing you should know is that Murni is very popular. It just has a little shop, but during night time, you can see Murni’s tables span across the entire row of shops. Even that is sometimes not enough as it is always full of people.
